Simon “Ghost” Riley

his sleep schedule is absolute crap, but if he finds some spare time to nap, he usually does it away from everybody

he can hardly close his eyes without memories and past terrors rushing into his head like a tidal wave

he has nightmares all the time

he stays utterly silent, but moves a lot. it starts with a twitch, then a squirm, and sometimes ends up completely thrashing before he wakes himself up

he will never admit it to anyone because it makes him feel weak

but if soap or someone else happened to wake him during a nightmare, it would be terrifying for the both of them. because ghost wouldn’t realize the difference between nightmare and reality fast enough to stop his reflexes from kicking in, and the other person wouldn’t be quick enough to avoid them

let’s face it, everyone in their line of work has nightmares. it’s kind of a given no matter who they were

but the extent of the terrors he faces in his sleep only really dawns on price once, after a hard mission, when they spent a few days trying to recover and recuperate and ghost was still exhausted by the end of it even though everyone else was better

its hard to tell with ghost when somethings a bit off, but price just managed to catch his slightly slouched shoulders and the dullness in his eyes no matter if he was acting perfectly normal or not

price never said anything, because he didn’t want to make a scene. but if he ever happens across a sleeping ghost, he always stays for a moment just to check that’s he’s good, then continues with whatever he was doing

there isn’t anything that can relieve or even dampen simon’s nightmares — it’s just part of him, engraved in his brain, on a spin cycle that can never be shut off. he sincerely believes the only time he’ll sleep peacefully is the day he dies

Johnny “Soap” MacTavish

soap is probably the most vocal in his sleep. he’ll start mumbling, and if it’s bad enough, maybe even shouting on a rare occasion

he doesn’t have nightmares near as much as ghost, but they’re still a very real part of his sleep

he always ends up waking himself up before anyone can get to him to do so — usually by flinching

he tries to play it off despite the fact that literally everyone and their mother knows a nightmare when they see one

he usually has them about other members of the 141 dying, or of past missions gone wrong, and no matter how manly and tough he wants to be, they get to him sometimes

after one he might be extra annoying to ghost, or stick a little closer to gaz’ side, or spend a bit more time with price than usual. just a little thing he can do to ensure they’re well

soap sleeps better when other people are around as opposed to being by himself, but he doesn’t care to do either because sleep is scarce in the military. something about the subtle noises in the background and the awareness that others are near keep some of the bad dreams at bay. he has them mostly when he’s alone

if someone does manage to wake him up before he wakes himself up, he’ll just brush the whole thing off despite the fact that he has to immediately go find every member of his team just incase

if he’s having a nightmare, talking to him might help it fade if he wakes up just enough for the voice to penetrate his dreams

Kyle “Gaz” Garrick

gaz won’t admit it, but nightmares really get under his skin

he is the whole shebang. squirming, mumbling, heavy breathing, and sometimes, if it’s really bad, he’ll start to cry in his sleep

he hates how weak it makes him look, even if he can’t really control it

he despises falling asleep around other people solely because he’s going to be a mess if he has a nightmare and he doesn’t want them to see him like that

soap has never seen one of his nightmares, only heard about it. but ghost has once, and price multiple times

he was having a pretty intense one regarding a previous mission while he and price were having to lay-low in a safe house, and only managed to be pulled out of it when price shouted his name for the fourth time

he has the hardest time out of the 141 afterwards. he can’t brush it off like soap or ignore it like ghost. he’ll just sit there in silence for a bit, dwelling on it, calming his nerves the best he can

the one single time ghost saw one was at base. it was honestly the worst nightmare he’d ever had, involving 141, his family, old friends, and it was just death, death, death

he was practically sobbing in his sleep but he couldn’t seem to wake up no matter how much he moved around

but he finally jerked awake and sat straight up when ghost’s low, manchester accent finally sounded with a loud: kid!

ghost was standing next to his bed, looming over him like some kind of boogeyman. he lightly pressed against gaz’s shoulder with a couple of fingers, continuing: “you’re good, kid. you’re awake now”

and then ghost left, and never said a word about it again

gaz has significantly less nightmares when he’s touching someone. whether that be his s/o at home in bed, price when he accidentally falls asleep on his shoulder on the car ride after a mission, or soap when they both crash on the couch in the commons, it really seems to help

John Price

price sometimes twitches when he has nightmares, but other than that, no real physical activity happens during them

he doesn’t have them all that often, actually — thank goodness, because when he does, it throws him all off

he forgets what he’s doing, because he’s thinking about it. he’ll call gaz by the wrong name and accidentally write upside down on a sheet of paper and send an email to the wrong person because whatever nightmare he had just lives in his head, eating away at his brain for the next day

he never tells anybody though, blowing it all off as fatigue. they believe him, for the most part. all but ghost who knows the feeling all too well

no one’s ever witnessed a nightmare of his and no one ever will, because he’s the captain, and it’s his job to care for his soldiers, not the other way around. he’s the one waking the others up when they’re restless in their beds, not vice versa

the only thing that can really stop them when he’s having them is for him to wake up, tbh

he, like ghost, has nightmares a lot. sometimes even night terrors

as bizarre as it might sound, he stays completely still during a nightmare other than one, teeny thing: his hands tremble

his nightmares are horrifyingly vivid and graphic and he hates them

the only person to ever, ever witness one was horangi, just once, when könig accidentally fell asleep in a safe house and they decided to let him sleep

neither of them shared any words after he flinched awake, just looked at each other in quiet acknowledgment for a moment, and never brought it up again

which he was thankful for

half of the time they’re vivid memories that had been twisted into darker versions, half the time they’re completely out of the box situations he’d never lived through but silently feared

he was just thankful every time he woke up

sometimes, on the battlefield, he gets a little odd afterwards because he thinks he’s becoming what he’s seen in his dreams

i turn 24 today. To celebrate, I made this comic to be a spiritual successor to lead balloon, a comic in which I talked about the darkest period of my life so far.

A lot has changed since my 23rd birthday and this one. My priorities have shifted a lot, in ways that I think are mostly good. But i think the best part about today is that suicide has gone back to being a far away notion. I'm really lucky, and I'm grateful for that.
